She said it has been easy to make time for shooting. “When you really like something,” she said, “you fit it in.” (click for larger version) | | December 09, 2008 CUMMING - Rob Tiffin loves movies. Spend a few moments with him and his passion for the entire medium is evident. From an early age, making movies his way is all the independent film maker ever dreamt of doing.
"I'm happy and I don't see myself doing anything else," he said.
And now the former South Forsyth High School student is nearing the completion of his latest work, "Flowers for the Devil," staring Ben Lamm and Lauren Jennings. He expects the movie, which is about a man during the transition between college and real life and shot in black and white, to be finished by the first of the year and start making the rounds at film festivals.
For Tiffin, completing and releasing the movie merely means he can move onto his next project. That's what he loves about being an independent film maker.
"It's complete creative freedom," he said.
Tiffin has ensured freedom by learning all he can about the film business so he can save money by working with minimal crew. It was a lesson he learned on his previous film, "Downtime" when he was able to secure a large cast including Larry Holden, who had recently finished work on "Batman Begins."
"We had this large crew and realized that I felt I could do what they were doing," he said, "but I didn't have the knowledge. I'm proud of Downtime, but I knew I could do better. Now, the process is much more streamlined."
Tiffin utilizes today's technology to make the most of talent around the world. His movies have boasted songs from a band in Paris and a group from Nigeria doing post production work such as color correction.
It's all part of Tiffin's belief of immersing himself in the world of film making while staying for now in Forsyth County where 90 percent of "Flowers" was filmed.
"Someone once said you should never travel outside your yard until you've fully explored it," he said. "I think the experience is so important."
Now that he has a few movies under his belt, what would Tiffin describe as his genre?
"I think I create very accurate portrayals of real life," he said. "My tastes are always evolving. I let real life influence me."
Tiffin said the movie process has to be fun.
"I love working with the actors," he said. "That's my favorite part."
Lamm, Tiffin's lead actor in "Flowers," shares his director's view on independent film maker.
"We like to do stuff that makes you giggle," the Johns Creek resident said. "Hopefully, all that translates on screen. Everyone is helping everyone on set. We put any ego aside, and we'd like to think that it shows."
Tiffin likes long takes during scenes, something Lamm appreciates.
"It allows you to learn," he said. "Some think that if they aren't great right away, they quit. I think everyone starts bad, but if you allow yourself time, you can learn."
Jennings, who stars opposite Lamm in 'Flowers,' agrees.
"I really liked Rob's directing in this movie," said the senior from UGA who had worked with Tiffin once before. "He is really laid back and makes you feel at ease so you can get into your character."
Tiffin said he hopes to continue making movies, possibly as many as five in 2009.
"To me," he said, "it's very satisfying to complete something you've written. With films, I sometimes feel like I don't have another option. It's something that has to be fed and, with technology the way it is, I will always be able to make movies."
Tiffin invites anyone seriously interested in being involved in the process to contact him at robtiffin@gmail.com or visit www.downtimemovies.com.
