| | | Development continues in downtown Alpharetta with this nearly completed two-story building on Milton Avenue offered by Rick Hobgood. | | December 03, 2008 ALPHARETTA – While Economic Development Coordinator Christopher Jones plans small steps to move downtown forward, City Council has chosen to lead by putting its plans for a new City Hall ahead of the rest of the City Center development.
With the mixed-used project stalled by economic stagnation, Jones said council's decision to move ahead with City Hall and a town green keeps the vision alive for the project started years ago.
Changes to the City Center project shouldn't be unexpected. As Jones puts it, until the day occupants move in projects are subject to change. They are based on the economy, available funding, tenant occupancy and market trends.
"So today, this project, while it's still a project on our books and moving forward, it's moving forward in a different manner," Jones said.
Jones said much needs to be done to help make sure existing merchants remain competitive so when new merchants enter downtown in Phase II of the City Center project, the existing businesses can stay successful.
Alpharetta's Community Development Department works as hard with retention of existing businesses as it does helping new ones, he said.
