Alleged shoplifters prove to be a handful in Cumming
December 02, 2008
CUMMING - Cumming police Nov. 19 arrested two women, one of them five months pregnant, who were suspected of shoplifting from Wal-Mart while allegedly high.

According to a report of the incident Brittany N. Gunter, 19, of Dawsonville and Karra Morgan, 20, of Cumming, were caught allegedly shoplifting nearly $120 worth of makeup and socks from the store.

When officers arrived to cite the pair, who they reported appeared to be high on drugs, Gunter and Morgan did not have any identification on them. Both said their purses were in their car, a Kia.

Examining the car, officers said the car smelled like burnt marijuana. However, a search for pot was made but none was found. When police came back inside the store to ask the girls about the drug smell, they told officers the only marijuana was allegedly the remnants of a smoked joint in the ashtray.

A search of Gunter's purse allegedly then turned up the restricted drug Xanax and other pills, so she was arrested. Morgan said she was five months pregnant and didn't think she should go to jail.

Officers agreed, but said they would still cite her. That's when Morgan reportedly began trying to take Gunter's purse with her, which police said she could not do. Still, she reportedly tried to take a black make up bag and the pack of cigarettes that allegedly held the pills discovered earlier. This was in full view of the officers.

Offering a defense, the pregnant Morgan stated she just wanted a cigarette. She was arrested.

That apparently set Gunter off, for she reportedly began threatening police and screaming obscenities at officers and Wal-Mart personnel. In addition, "She began stating that she would be able to get out of her handcuffs. [and] That she'd done it before in the back of patrol cars."

While being taken to a waiting police car, Gunter complained of being abused by officers. Once in the car, she reportedly kicked at the doors and windows. Both women were taken to Cumming's jail.

Once at jail, officers searched the make up bag Morgan had been so intent on taking with her. It allegedly held marijuana.

Gunter was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of barbiturates, shoplifting and obstruction. Morgan was charged with possession of barbiturates, shoplifting and tampering with evidence.
