ROSWELL - The undefeated state championship football team from 1968 returns to its home field at Roswell High School Friday night, 40 years after winning 13 straight games.

The 2008 Hornets face Lassiter at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 7.

Briarwood. North Springs. Lithonia. R.L. Cousins. St. Joe. Norcross. Eva Thomas. Stockbridge. Wills. Hamilton. Mary Persons. Washington Wilkes. Irwin County. They all fell to the Hornets that glorious year.

The Roswell High Yearbook for that year tells the story of the championship game:

"On Dec. 14, spectators at Roswell stadium anxiously awaited the Class B championship game between the Roswell Hornets and the Irwin County Indians. The crowd was smaller than expected, but understandably so because the temperature that night never rose above nine or ten. The fans who did show up, however, were not disappointed. In the first few minutes of the first quarter, Roswell's Allan Guthrie smashed into Indian QB O. Roberts and forced him to fumble. Tom Bower picked up the loose ball and charged 29 yards for the score. The first time the Hornets got the ball, Jeff Bower fired a 21-yard scoring pass to Pug Mabry. The Hornets came across with three more TD's and allowed Irwin County to score only once. The final tally was an overwhelming score of 32-7."

The team was coached by Charles Horne. Ray Manus, a future head coach, was on his staff.
