Following the switch to their own 911 dispatch center Oct. 1, Alpharetta and Milton's public safety departments have also teamed up for comprehensive fire service in both cities.
That means no matter who gets the call, said Alpharetta Public Safety Director Gary George, the closest fire truck will respond, regardless of jurisdiction.
"We might be able to get to Mid-Broadwell Road or Freemanville Road quicker than Milton," said George. "But Milton can get to Crabapple faster."
As part of the move, Milton now houses one of its ladder trucks in Alpharetta station No. 1 on Webb Bridge Road and keeps three shifts — 12 firefighters — in the building at all times.
That frees up Alpharetta to move its other ladder truck to station No. 3 on Westside Parkway, ensuring better safety for all citizens, said George.
Milton Public Safety Director Chris Lagerbloom said the plan has only taken a week to prove its worth.
"It's been just a tremendous asset," he said. "You'd think after having Fulton for so long, the first week would have a problem, but there have been none."
