Non-emergency number changes

With Milton and Alpharetta teaming up for emergency disptach service Oct. 1, there will be a new non-emergency number for the Alpharetta-based 911 center for city of Milton residents. The number is 678-297-6300, Option 1.

Complete burn ban in effect

Milton issued a complete, city-wide, outdoor burn ban on Oct. 1

Milton Fire Marshal Melissa Henderson issued the ban in response to the continuing drought and reduced water supply levels. Under terms of the ban, Milton residents must refrain from all outdoor burning, including open campfires and fires built for the burning of debris, until further notice. This ban will remain in effect until conditions improve and the Fire Marshal rescinds the order.

"It's important to remember that we're still experiencing a drought, which brings increased fire hazards," said Henderson. "I encourage every citizen to abide by this ban in an effort to prevent unnecessary water usage and fire hazards."

Exempted from the ban are the following:

• Training fires conducted under the direct control and supervision of qualified instructors at a training facility operated by a fire department or government entity.

• Fires for commercial outdoor cooking and cooking for fairs and festivals. A water source capable of extinguishing the fire must be present, as well as an approved fire extinguisher.

• Liquid-fueled gas fire stoves, grills or lanterns.

To report burning violations, call Alpharetta/Milton Dispatch (non-emergency) at 678-297-6300. For additional information or if you have any questions, contact Melissa Henderson, City of Milton Fire Marshal, at 678-242-2500.

Boot Drive raises $27,000 for MDA

Milton's firefighters, with the help of big-hearted citizens, outdid themselves for the second year by raising $27,000 with the 2008 Fill-the-Boot Campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

In just three Fridays, two in July and one in August, Milton's firefighters were able to collect an outstanding number of donations at intersections and other locations throughout the city. "It has been a privilege working with MDA for the past two boot drives and I can't say enough about the generosity of the citizens of Milton," said Fire Lt. Chris Coker. "Our firefighters show their dedication and commitment in a number of ways, from collecting monies for charity in the summer heat to risking their lives in the heat of a blazing fire. We commend them on their hard work and selfless service."

The money raised will go towards medicine, treatment, research, and powered wheel chairs for children in Georgia affected by Muscular Dystrophy.
