JOHNS CREEK - It was the very first show to be performed in the Chattahoochee High School Auditorium. Now, years later, "Second Samuel" will be on stage again this week.
Students and cast members were treated to a visit from the playwright of "Second Samuel," Pamela Parker, Sept. 26, when she stopped by to answer questions and discuss the play.
The play is set in the 1940s and follows a young boy named "B-Flat" and other characters who live in a small Georgia town called "Second Samuel." The show touches on relationships, prejudices, expectations and reality.
Students and cast and crew members inquired about the characters of the play and wondered if any of Parker's personality was a basis for characters.
"There's a little bit of me in everybody in the show," said Parker, who added some characters are based on her own family members. "I drew from real life inspirations for the characters."
Parker, an Atlanta native, said she had no idea the play would become a success. The show has premiered locally, performed in theatre festivals and also had an Off Broadway run.
"It's really cool to have someone from the local area here," said Phil Campbell, theatre director. He saw the play at a college theatre performance and fell in love with the show.
"This is a really important play - it has a message of tolerance and acceptance," said Campbell.
The cast includes Noah Genin, Matt Bond, Fabian Mettler, Daniel Revell, Rachel Glover, Deion Jones, Ben Schultz, Amanda Harrelson, Hope Roberts, Jennifer Kortier and Jake Moskowitz. Samantha Campbell is the student director for the play. Technical aspects for the production are being handled by Rickey Brewington, Pedro Ferreira and Jackson Milway.
Second Samuel opens Thursday, Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m. The show will also be held Oct. 3-4 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 and will be available at the box office prior to the show.
