ALPHARETTA - By the end of the week motorists who must travel through the Webb Bridge-Shirley Bridge Road intersection will be able to negotiate it with the benefit of a temporary traffic light.
Alpharetta City Councilman John Monson said this corridor is very congested, especially in the evening peak hours. The light allows east-west traffic to flow freely rather than at a four-way stop. Traffic without the light backups up all the way to Alpharetta High School, he said. Two other schools are on Webb Bridge – Webb Bridge Middle and Creek View Elementary.
"This should help a lot with the east-west flow on Webb Bridge," Monson said.
The intersection is scheduled for a permanent improvement, but City Administrator Bob Regus, Engineering Public Works Director John Moskaluk and Monson agreed that a temporary light was needed now.
"I really believe this is a home run for anyone who lives in that corridor, or anyone who wants to go to one of those schools," said Councilman D.C. Aiken.
It should help anyone wanting to go home or to Webb Bridge Park, also, Aiken said.
Pete Sewczwicz, deputy director of Engineering Public Works, said if all goes well the Transportation Improvement Project (TIP) for the intersection be moving forward. Negotiations for right of way and closings on that property will be followed by letting the project out for bids, probably around January.
He said the city can determine the project schedule, timing it to be completed by the start of the next school year.
"From this point on, this will be a signalized intersection," Monson said.
