September 07, 2008 What is the biggest business challenge for you in providing health care?
Our biggest challenge has been our lack of visibility. The hospital is situated in a low area, it's not visible from many of the major roadways, and it's proven difficult from some people to find. Similarly, we have had a hard time getting the word out that we're open, we're close by, and we are a full service hospital offering everything from flu shots to brain surgery. Our quality scores have ranked us among the top 10 percent of hospitals in the country and patient satisfaction has been consistently high.
What changes have been made to your business because of these challenges?
We've improved our landscaping making our campus both more attractive and more visible. We've also changed our marketing approach focusing more on print, web-based mediums (check out our blog!), and community partnerships. Ultimately, hospitals succeed or fail based on word of mouth. If patients have good experiences they tell their friends who might also decide to use the hospital. This is why we focus first and always on quality and service.
What does this mean for health care for your patients?
We've gotten progressively busier over the course of the summer and have set consecutive patient volume records each of the last three months. This tells us our strategy is working, patients are finding us and they're have good experiences. Our physicians are outstanding—among the best in the world—and our nurses and clinical staff members are well-trained, caring and devoted to their patients. We believe our strong base of community physicians, teamed with the academics, research and technology of Emory Healthcare, enables us to provide world-class healthcare right here in Johns Creek and the surrounding communities.
What business trends do you see in store for your organization?
As I mentioned, we've seen record volumes during each of the past three months. This is particularly noteworthy given that it's mid-summer, a time when hospitals are typically a little less busy. We expect to be even busier this winter and anticipate demand to keep growing as Johns Creek and the surrounding communities grow. It is likely we'll need to expand the hospital within the next two or three years.
