ALPHARETTA -- An anticipated record voter turnout will be one topic Secretary of State Karen Handel discusses when she visits the Windward Rotary Club in Alpharetta Monday, Sept. 8.
The club meets Mondays at noon at the Atlanta Marriott-Windward on Windward Parkway in Alpharetta. Guests are invited to visit the lunch meeting, which costs $20 per person.
Handel, a North Fulton resident, will advise club members and guests on the Oct. 6 voter registration deadline for the November General Election and the need to bring photo identification to vote. To avoid long lines, she advises voters to take advantage of advance voting week Oct. 27-31.
Just last week she began what Carrothers called an innovative partnership launched with the Atlanta Falcons, teaming up with five players to record radio ads playing during pre-game, game and post-game shows reminding voters to bring photo IDs and to register to vote.
County registrars need lots of help running polling places, and Handel will encourage club members to contact their registrar's office to become a poll worker.
"We have a real need, including young people who are technologically savvy and want to have a greater involvement in our election practices," said Matt Carrothers, director of Media Relations for Handel's office.
Georgia law sets the minimum age for poll workers at 16 years old, so high school and college students may want to contact their teachers or professors to see if they can get permission – and possibly credit – for working the polls.
Handel's other topics will include a broad overview of the Secretary of State's office and latest developments in each of its agencies, including professional licensing boards, securities and incorporations. She recently announced her plans for government transparency, which include posting her office's budget and updating it monthly.
