CUMMING - Kristen Brooke Sorrell spent 28 nights at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta last year to start her fight against leukemia.
"She went through 8 months of heavy chemo weekly which included many shorts and more pills than you can county," said her mother, Jennifer, who has lived with her family in Forsyth County for about 12 years.
Kristin, now 5, has made great strides since March of 2007 and is in full remission. She will continue the maintenance portion of her therapy until June 2009.
But her family wants to spread the word about their experience at the Aflac Cancer Center by taking part in the 750 WSB Radio Care-a-Thon Aug. 21 and 22.
"The people at the Aflac Cancer Center are part of our family now," Sorrell said. "They love us, especially Kristen, so much. We always know they are there for us in any way they can help. Kristen runs to jump in the arms of her nurses hugs when we go to the clinic. Our biggest wish is to raise enough money for research to cure childhood cancer forever. No child should ever have to go through anything like this."
Kristen is now attending kindergarten with her fifth grade brother, Blake.
"We are blessed beyond words," she said. "Our faith in God has been the source of strength needed to carry us through this journey. Our children are more compassionate towards others now and we have witnessed the best in every human being because of this trial."
Her mother said Kristen had a wonderful summer and is handling everyone "wonderfully."
"She had a fun summer," she said. "She's been swimming and doing all the things a five-year-old should do."
Beginning at 5 a.m. August 21 and continuing through 6 p.m. August 22, listeners will hear not only the voices of WSB Radio's personalities, but also the courageous voices of children and families who have benefited from care received at the Aflac Cancer Center.
