No-charge breakfast to selected schools
For the fourth year, Fulton Schools will provide free breakfast to all students attending schools which did not make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), or are in Needs Improvement status. The goal of the program is to provide each student with a nutritional meal to start the day on the right path.
Schools in North Fulton offering free breakfast to all students are Elkins Pointe and Holcomb Bridge middle schools, Independence High School and Crossroads/Second Chance North in Roswell.
Affidavit of residence needed for all students
For the second year, parents of all Fulton County students must submit an Affidavit of Residence for each child enrolled in all Fulton County schools. The forms are due in August and students who do not have the required form can be removed from the school system beginning in September.
Last year's process was fraught with problems, mainly in the administration and record-keeping side, but school officials have promised changes this year to streamline the process. Each school will also have a notary available to notarize the form at no charge.
"The purpose of the Affidavit of Residence is to make sure that only students who reside in Fulton County attend Fulton schools," explained Hale. "This means that Fulton taxpayers' money stays in Fulton County to pay for the education of those who live there – instead of students from other counties who attend under false pretenses."
Two years ago the school system hired two residency investigators to look into questionable residencies. The decision to hire investigators was based on the results of a pilot program which uncovered several instances of students attending schools they were either not zoned for, or who did not live in Fulton County.
Returning students, with the exception of those entering sixth grade or ninth grade, do not need to provide proof of residence, but will still need to complete and submit an Affidavit of Residence form. Students in their senior year of high school do not have to provide a form or proof of residence.
