ALPHARETTA -- A 15-year-old Alpharetta High School girl remains in a coma and on a ventilator after she was injured along with a 17-year-old boy in an early morning motorcycle crash July 20 in Windward.

Claire Stewart, who was named AHS' freshman homecoming queen last year, is in North Fulton Regional Hospital and remains in critical condition, said her mother, Debra Stewart.

Claire was thrown from a 2005 Harley Davidson early July 20 close to the Lake Windward Club on Lake Windward Drive. The 17-year-old driver, who attends another high school and had little experience driving the motorcycle when he took it out for the joyride according to police, underwent surgery for a broken arm, hand and wrist.

Debra said her daughter's injuries include critical brain trauma, broken bones in her face and behind an eye, a broken pelvis, and a severed femur leg bone, ankle and foot. Claire's visitations are for immediate family members only because of the seriousness of her injuries, Debra said.

Debra said her daughter likely wouldn't have survived without the quick medical attention she received from Alpharetta's public safety personnel.

"[We are] grateful to the quick response of the Alpharetta Police Department and emergency services," she said.

Claire's family has set up a Web site, www.caringbridge.org/visit/clairestewart, in order to "give updates on her condition and to allow her friends to express their support and concern for her," said Debra.

In addition, a group of students met at Alpharetta High School July 26 and made a large banner for their injured friend.

Debra, a crossing guard at Creekview Elementary, said support from the community has been helpful in the wake of the tragedy.

"It has been very difficult for us. The support, faith, prayers and love from friends and family is comforting to us," she said.
