Actors from across North Fulton and Forsyth take to the stage starting Friday to present "The Boy Friend," Sandy Wilson's Broadway hit musical in Alpharetta's ACT1 Theater.
Wilson's romantic spoof of 1920s musicals opened in both New York and London in 1954. The Broadway version starred then unknown Julie Andrews as Polly Browne.
A 2008 Metropolitan Atlanta Theatre Award nominee, veteran actress, vocalist, costumer and linguist, Anne Voller makes her debut as director of a musical in "The Boy Friend." Joel Lillethun, music director for the Alpharetta Presbyterian Church, is the show's music director, with dancer Pamela Hines as the choreographer for the shows multiple 1920s dance routines.
Cumming resident Victoria Coe stars as Polly Browne with Gainesville resident and Georgia Tech student Brian Webber as Tony. Seventeen-year-old Victoria is the fifth child of eight of Cumming residents Bill and Lane Coe. Her sisters Elizabeth, (Nancy) and Adi (Fay), and her youngest brother Richard are also in "The Boy Friend." All are home-schooled, all play the piano and all have taken music theory at Brenau University since the first grade. All of the children except Richard, who is training as a cellist, play the violin. Elizabeth's primary instrument is the harp.
Johns Creek resident Stacey Serowitz is featured as the madcap Maisie who believes firmly that there is safety in numbers when it comes to boyfriends. The three-year Broadway Boot Camp veteran is a "triple threat" actress, singer, and dancer. She has been accepted into the North Springs High Charter School Drama Department as a senior student. Serowitz takes private vocal and acting lessons and has studied adult tap. One dream came true for. Serowitz at Broadway Bootcamp this summer. She sang "The Beauty Is" for Adam Guettle, the lyricist and composer of the Tony Award winning musical, "The Light in the Piazza."
Roswell resident Tom Strong performs as Polly's father, a multi-millionaire widower, and long ago sweetheart of Madame Dubonnet, portrayed by Jennifer Hartshorn. A veteran actor and director of local theater, Strong is a retired engineer with IBM.
