July 15, 2008 FORSYTH COUNTY - With a turnout much lower than expected, unofficial numbers show voters supported one incumbent while voting out another.
Incumbent District Two Forsyth County Commissioner Brian Tam defeated three challengers for 55 percent of the vote. District Four incumbent David Richard was topped by challenger Patrick Bell who claimed about 55 percent of the final tally.
Newcomer Jim Boff came out ahead for the District 5 race left open by incumbent Linda Ledbetter who did not seek re-election. Boff earned 44 percent of the vote while Julie Tressler claimed about 35 percent.
District 5 will be decided in a runoff on Aug. 5.
Voters overwhelmingly supported incumbent Sheriff Ted Paxton with more than 85 percent of the vote.
Both incumbents seeking re-election for the board of education, Chairwoman Nancy Roche and boardmember Tom Cleveland, defeated the competition.
One BOE incumbent, Ronnie Pinson, decided not to seek re-election. Darla Sexton Light won this seat, defeating Fletcher McCone.
Voter Registrar Gary Smith said the July 15 General Primary was "much slower than expected."
"I really didn't expect this," he said. "I think the final percentage will come in around 16 to 18 percent."
Smith said he was happy with the entire process, especially considering the county had one of the highest turnouts for advance voting in the entire state.
"That means people are really coming in and getting used to coming out for early voting," he said.
Smith said voting went off with no major difficulties.
"There was nothing unusual," he said. "There were problems with a couple machines. Other than that, there were no major problems."

Misleading headline! July 21, 2008 | 08:04 AM
Quality reporting would have pointed out that all Jim Boff "won" on Tuesday was the right to face Julie Tressler in a runoff next month.
That's the same Jim Boff who told Julile during the debate that "she should stay at home and take care of her kids and leave government to the men folk."
