JOHNS CREEK - The Johns Creek Rotary Club announced that it has awarded a $1,000 college scholarship to Jenny Mao and a $1,000 college scholarship to Katie Rowell.
Mao is a 2008 graduate of Northview who will begin a six-year medical program at Penn State in July of 2008.
She was actively involved in the Interact Club at Northview where she served as secretary of the club during her junior year and president of the club in her senior year. As president, Mao organized monthly service projects such as car wash fundraisers for AIDS research, AIDS Walk, nursing home visitations, a shoe drive for Afghan children and road cleanups in conjunction with the Rotary Club. She is also the recipient of an additional $1,000 scholarship awarded by the Rotary District 6910 of which the Johns Creek Club is a member.
Rowell is a 2008 graduate of Greater Atlanta Christian School. She will be attending Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee where she will major in nursing. During the last four years Rowell served in children's shelters, orphanages, and went on mission trips to Mexico, Jamaica, Costa Rica and Valdosta.
She also volunteered for the Atlanta Food Bank, Operation Christmas Child and the Special Olympics. Rowell hopes to transfer to Vanderbilt University after two years at Lipscomb.
Rotary Club Youth Program Chairman and President Elect Render Freeman said, "The Rotary Club of Johns Creek is very proud to offer financial support to these fine young ladies. Their example is an inspiration to us all."
