ATLANTA -- Forsyth County's best swimmers showcased their talents in the 2008 championship held at June 21 at the Georgia Tech Pool.
More than 900 swimmers took part, about 200 more than last year.
It was a day for the record books. A total of 39 county records were shattered during the championship and a record number of 16 teams participated in the contest.
"It was a shock," said Sam Grass, one of the event organizers. "We never anticipated such a turnout."
The top five team spots were taken by Grand Cascades Rapids, Aberbeen Breakers, Laurel Springs Piranhas, Lake Forest Lightning and the Creekstone Cudas.
"I have never been disappointed with how this team has performed," said Rapids coach Brett Ryan, who is in the midst of his seventh and final year at the helm of the team. "It's a great team to begin with, just a great team of kids and parents."
Ryan said the team didn't hesitate in what he considered to be a "very intimidating pool."
"They did excellent," he said. "So many records were broken. "I am so estatic. I couldn't be happier."
Grass said about 135 swimmers will represent Forsyth County at the July state championships in Augusta.
"In the last eight years, I think Forsyth County swimming has improved to a point that we could very well be as high as second in the state," he said. "We are certainly in the top five."
In the end, however, Grass hopes it was an "enjoyable family experience" for all in attendence.
"That is the ultimate objective," he said.
