GAINESVILLE -- Lifeline, an affiliate of Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC), recognized volunteers who work with the emergency response system at a luncheon on Wednesday, May 28. Held at Lake Lanier Island's Emerald Point Resort and Conference Center, the luncheon honored volunteers for their work installing and maintaining personal emergency response systems for residents of northeast Georgia.
Special guest speaker at the luncheon was Daisy Smith Proctor, the mother of Lifeline Coordinator Dianne Appling.
The Lifeline program allows patients to continue living independently in their homes with the security of knowing they can quickly access help if they need it. By pressing a lightweight, waterproof alert button worn around the neck or wrist, subscribers can signal the Lifeline call center, where staff can determine what kind of help is needed and call for it immediately.
This past year, Lifeline volunteers donated 1,228 hours and traveled 9,675 miles in 13 counties to install Lifeline systems, replace batteries and help buttons, trouble shoot problems and pick up Lifeline units.
"Lifeline of NGMC celebrates volunteers every day," said Dianne Appling, Lifeline coordinator. "We have 365 Lifeline subscribers in our 13-county area. We are growing because more and more people see Lifeline as their way to stay in their homes and be protected 24 hours a day. The Lifeline program has been successful for 24 years because of the volunteers who so selflessly give of their time and energy to keep the subscribers safe 24 hours a day, and in those 24 years, volunteers have donated 21,700 hours of service."

Lifeline serves subscribers in Forsyth, Hall, White, Lumpkin, Dawson, Stephens, Rabun, Towns, Union, Banks, Jackson, Habersham and Barrow Counties.
