2008-05-29 MORE TOP STORIES | Alpharetta councilman targets new jobs

June 12, 2008 Alpharetta gave its residents their first chance to make comment on the city's next fiscal year budget, but they passed on the opportunity. They get a second chance at 6:30 p.m., just seven hours later.
An 11:30 a.m. meeting on a Thursday was tough even for council members, with only four able to attend -- just enough for a quorum.
Councilman David Belle Isle warned he would question any new jobs being created at the city at a time he feels it should be cutting back.
City Administrator Bob Regus told council he and Finance Director Tom Harris had done some juggling of duties in light of the pending retirement of his assistant, Barbara Durham, to shift some duties around to cut out part of those new hires.
First, Regus said he found a way for his staff to take on the duties that otherwise would require a part-time administrative assistant for Information Technology.
He also said discussions were made with Public Safety Director Gary George to reduce a full-time staff request to part time.
The addition of two positions in the Engineer & Public Works department also came under scrutiny. One position is needed to fulfill a state mandate to survey one-sixth of the city's stormwater system every year. The other position is for a GIS (Geographic Information Systems) expert to help the staff make use of all the information it collects on the city's roads, sidewalks, city-owned vehicles and structures, and developments.
