ALPHARETTA -- The intermittent rain showers and cloudy skies didn't deter the over 270 participants from running and walking around Alpharetta High School on May 3 to raise over $10,000 for Autism Speaks in the name of Burt Waters, son of Raiders head football coach Bill Waters.
Burt, his brother Billy, mom Mary and dad kicked off the run with a rousing start for the crowd of supporters, which included a number of 4-legged participants as well.
The Alpharetta Junior Raider cheerleaders created the run-through sign for the start of the race and later presented Burt with a huge Teddy Bear and signed cards of support.
Other participants included the Chattahoochee and Centennial high school cheerleaders, the EZ 8 Running Camp, the Alpharetta High football and lacrosse teams, the Alpharetta High chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and many others who came to show their support for the Waters family, the AHS Community and Autism Speaks.
"I personally was thrilled to see all the young people enjoying the event itself. Not only were they supporting an amazing cause in Autism Speaks, but how healthy to be in a school environment participating in a 5K Fun Run/Walk within our community," said Linda Burns, Raider Run for Autism coordinator. "We look forward to next year being even bigger and better."
