Planning for new Forsyth jail continues

FORSYTH COUNTY -- Charles Laughinghouse wants this done right.

Since winning the District 1 post in 2002, the Forsyth County Commission Chairman has seen a handful of jail referendums. All have failed to pass when placed before the voters.

"There have always been questions," he said. "If we do it, we are going to do it right. If the voters turn it down this time, it will not be because of anything the staff did. The voters will know everything."

Voters will have the chance to learn about the proposed jail with two town hall meetings scheduled for August where County Manager Rhonda O'Connor said there would be a great deal of information regarding the proposed jail. Voters will hit the polls in November.

O'Connor said there have been some difficult decisions when planning for the purposed jail. Issues ranging from inmate services to video visitation have had to be addressed.

"We have had to answer such questions as what medical services would be on site and what will be handled off site," she said.

This planning has resulted in a purposed jail plan that is "functional," Laughinghouse said.

"This would be an adequate facility," he said. "It is not luxurious."

Laughinghouse said a new jail is needed in the county as the current facility is bursting "at the seams."
