FORSYTH COUNTY - The local school system is hoping to start the budget approval process despite the fact they have no definitive numbers of the county's tax digest.
"We still have no information and hopefully we'll get it next week," said Chief Financial Officer Dan Jones May 30.
"The bottom line is that we have a $12.9 million deficit based on a projected six percent growth in the tax digest. We need to decide how we are going to cover that deficit."
Jones said it is important Forsyth County residents understand there are two accounts, one for operations and one to make payments on construction projects.
"We can't use money from the construction account to cover operations," he said.
Board members are hoping a tax increase for the county will not be necessary.
"I am really hoping we won't have to raise taxes," said board member Mike Dudgeon.
Forsyth County's millage rate is the lowest it has been in years at 14.395, which is also the lowest in the Metro Atlanta area. The board rolled back the rate last year from 14.708.
Dudgeon made the motion to drop the board member travel funds in the budget from $15,000 to $10,000.
"It's not much, but we've asked others to trim," he said. "I want us to go right along with that."
The motion passed unanimously.
The deficit is caused in part by a slowdown in the economy. Board member Tom Cleveland said they should be cautious.
"We have to expect this downturn will continue into next year," he said.
Jones said he hopes to have some more information by the next board meeting.
"Otherwise, the budget process will be moved back into July," he said.
