April 18, 2008 Still unsure if you can water your Azaleas or hose off the pollen that's turned your driveway yellow? And what about the sneaky neighbors, are they getting away with watering their Bermuda while yours is having a hard time greening up?
Fulton County master gardeners will answer these questions and more as well as give ideas for water conservation on Saturday, April 26 at the Bulloch Hall's Garden Faire in historic Roswell.
Based on the record number of phone calls pouring into the county's Extension office in Sandy Springs, residents and landscape professionals are bewildered by the barrage of announcements from government agencies concerning water conservation at the state, county, and municipal levels.
Callers want answers to such frequently asked questions as: "When can I water?" "Can I water?" "How do I know which utility supplies my water?" "What is the story on permits for watering?"
North Fulton Master Gardeners (NFMG) manning office phones advise individuals to contact their municipality for guidelines.
Taking a proactive approach, master gardeners are hosting this free water conservation training from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Louise Estabrook, agricultural and natural resource agent for the UGA Cooperative Extension-Fulton County, will lead sessions every hour on the hour from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Homeowners wishing to install new landscapes will find the training particularly helpful in meeting the requirements of the Outdoor Water Use Registration program, Estabrook assures.
"It's really fairly simple. Attend the short seminar, take a quiz, score 70 or better, and receive your permit," she said.
Before or after taking the training session, individuals can enjoy the Garden Faire on the grounds of Bulloch Hall. The event features garden art, tools and accessories, a flea market, handmade crafts, homegrown plants for sale, and more. New this year is a cooking demonstration by award-winning Chef Linton Hopkins of Restaurant Eugene.
