(click for larger version) | | March 17, 2008 Fourth grade students in Bonnye Woodlief's class at Summit Hill Elementary school gave up their class Valentine's party to do a service project for Georgia soldiers serving in Iraq.
The kids wrote cards of gratitude and put together 125 bags of "friendship mix" – a trail mix put together with contributions from everyone in the class. The bags and cards were delivered to the American Legion Post 201 in Alpharetta, which will forward the items to soldiers in Iraq.
"This was such a great project for the kids to be involved in," said room mom Sandy Rasque. "It's important for them to give of themselves in order to understand what our soldiers are sacrificing every day."
She noted the American Legion Post 201 welcomes all donations for soldiers serving overseas. Particular items requested by soldiers include Pop Tarts, drink mixes (such as Crystal Light, Tang), candy, trail mix, beef jerky, magazines, body wipes, lip balms, and soaps.
Contributions can be dropped at the Legion Post on Wills Road at the intersection of Old Milton Parkway.
