ASO changes tunes on Alpharetta, Milton bands
March 12, 2008
ALPHARETTA -- Alpharetta and Milton High School bands need to practice a different tune, as the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra has changed its program to open the inaugural season of the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park.

The high school bands will join the ASO at the new 12,000-seat facility in Alpharetta on Saturday, May 10 at 8 p.m. Music Director Robert Spano leads the ASO in a performance of Bernstein's Candide Overture and Copland's Appalachian Spring, replacing Broadway works by various composers.

The 320 musicians from the local Alpharetta and Milton High marching bands will join the ASO in the finale of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, which will close the concert.

The rest of the May 10 program remains the same, featuring the Marcus Roberts Trio performing Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, plus the final movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, "Ode to Joy" with soprano Christine Brewer, mezzo-soprano Elizabeth Bishop, tenor Vinson Cole, baritone Gordon Hawkins, and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus.

Turner Classic Movies Host and official historian of the Academy Awards® Robert Osborne will be the host for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's Turner Classic Movie Night, a musical evening featuring classic movies with music conducted by Richard Kauffman on Saturday, Aug. 16, at 8 p.m.
