2008-01-31 JOHNS CREEK HERALD | North Fulton police may be cross sworn

February 06, 2008 Don't think that just because you have crossed into Johns Creek the Roswell Police Department officer behind you won't be able to pull you over for running that red light. Soon, they will.
Taking notes from the current partnership between Roswell and Alpharetta police departments, the North Fulton Mayor's Association [NFMA] hopes to spread the love – and the law enforcement.
"Our officers have supported it," said Roswell Mayor Jere Wood, speaking on behalf of both Roswell and Alpharetta to the NFMA last Thursday. "I wanted to suggest it as something we should look into for the other [North Fulton] cities."
The partnership comes in handy for police who regularly patrol roads which cross back and forth into different cities, such as Holcomb Bridge Road, Mansell Road and Haynes Bridge Road. Because the lines get blurry during patrol, it makes sense to give officers some flexibility over the areas in which they may catch law breakers, such as those running a red light, speeding or with arrest warrants out.
"It makes our police forces larger when they need to be larger," said Alpharetta Mayor Arthur Letchas.
However, the collaboration does not hand over unchecked jurisdiction powers. Roswell Police are not routinely patrolling the heart of Alpharetta since there is more than enough for them to be doing within their own city limits, according to Wood. Officers are given two separate ledgers to make sure proper ticketing takes place for each city.
"Each city handles its own liability," he said.
