FORSYTH COUNTY -- Early results show Forsyth County residents support continuing the special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) and the obligation bond.

The unofficial numbers also show the county supports Mitt Romney and Hillary Clinton as presidential candidates.

The much anticipated SPLOST vote saw 69 percent of voters were in favor while nearly 31 percent voted against. Nearly 70 percent were in favor of the obligation bond while 30 percent voted against.

Republican voters gave Romney a slim lead at 35 percent with Mike Huckabee at 32 percent and John McCain at 28 percent.

The Democrat vote was even closer. Forsyth County gave Clinton nearly 48 percent (47.97 percent) of the vote to provide a close lead over Barack Obama's (47.82 percent).

The early numbers show 38 percent of registered voters cast their votes with 97 percent of precincts reporting. Voter Registrar Gary Smith said some precincts had "a lot more people" than expected.

"In some cases, we were overwhelmed with the turnout," he said. "We had to send some more poll workers to places. The voters were just coming at us all day. We were really under the gun."

However, Smith said it was "a very smooth day."

"I think today was an outstanding success," he said. "I really want to thank the hard work from our poll workers. They were the ones getting up early and working all day. They're really the ones that make this happen."
