Alvarado’s family mourns Monday morning at the scene of her shooting, the family owned grocery store she had run for years. (click for larger version) | | January 30, 2008 ROSWELL -- The Azteca Grocery and Taqueria on Ga. 9 has been closed since the fatal shooting of its owner, Lydia Alvarado, Jan. 26.
But a stream of well-wishers and mourners stopped by Monday, Jan. 28 to drop off flowers, candles, cards and other trinkets. They left the gifts on a growing, make-shift shrine in front of the usually busy store.
According to those well-wishers on scene, Alvarado was a popular and gregarious part of Roswell's downtown and Latino community.
K.T. Lus has been a longtime shopper at Azteca, stopping in at least twice a week.
He said he was always greeted with a kind word by the Alvarado's.
"Her and her sister would always talk to you," he said. "It's pretty shocking. This is a pretty friendly place, a neighborhood grocery."
Doug Robbins agreed. His brother owns a strip of nearby shops and he had known the victim for a number of years.
"You just couldn't ask for better people," he said. "She was more about giving than just taking someone's dollar."
Robbins was also shocked at the nature of the "horrible" crime.
"It just doesn't make sense at all," he said. "I hope they catch the guys who did it."
The owner of the family-run business had two young daughters.
Alvarado's wake and funeral were held Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 28 and 29, at the Roswell Funeral Home on Mansell Road.
