Alpharetta wants input on North Point proposal

BELL ISLE

ALPHARETTA -- City officials want input on its draft plan for the area near North Point Mall in a Livable Centers Initiative. Alpharetta will use a public forum Tuesday, Feb. 5 to present the draft results of its North Point Activity Center Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) to its residents.

The event will be held at Alpharetta City Hall beginning at 7 p.m.

The LCI is focused on the creation of an integrated transportation and land use plan for one of Alpharetta's primary commercial districts. The study is focused on an area of the city located between Mansell and Haynes Bridge Roads and North Point and Westside Parkways. The area includes North Point Mall and the new Verizon Amphitheater at Encore Park.

Councilman David Belle Isle said the draft plan has been developed based upon comments and public input gathered through a series of meetings and online surveys

"We asked residents and the business community how this rapidly changing area of the city should be developed over the next 5 to 10 years, and our consultant has designed a draft plan based on what they said," Belle Isle said "Then we identified transportation improvements that need to happen in order for that plan to work."

Some properties within the North Point Activity Center will soon be old enough that they become targets for redevelopment, city planning officials said, while other properties are being developed for the first time. Due to economics and changing demographic and market trends, it is likely that such development will be very different from the traditional suburban model.

For more information on the project or the public forum, contact James Drinkard, Alpharetta's economic development coordinator, at 678-297-6075 or jdrinkard@alpharetta.ga.us.

The draft North Point LCI plan provides recommendations on development densities, architectural styles, and transportation that will accommodate those new mixed-use development trends in a manner that is appropriate for Alpharetta, city officials said.

The North Point Activity Center LCI is a joint effort of the city, the North Fulton Community Improvement District and the Atlanta Regional Commission.
