January 28, 2008 FORSYTH COUNTY - Several members of the Forsyth County Board of Education came out swinging Jan. 17 against "The GREAT Plan for Georgia."
The plan, championed by speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives, Glenn Richardson, sets out to repeal every Ad Valorum tax and instead rely entirely on sales tax as revenue.
Board member Ann Crowe spoke concerning the proposed tax initiative saying that if the bill is passed local control of schools would be handed over to the state.
Crowe said the state of Michigan is entirely run by sales tax.
"All you hear are horror stories about Michigan [schools]," she said.
Fellow board member Mike Dudgeon said Forsyth County is running fine.
"There is nothing is Forsyth County that needs to be supported by the state," he said.
Crowe then spoke about the possible logistics of the speakers plan.
"To believe the state will give us back our money to fund our schools, well, the history just isn't there to support [that belief]," she said.
If two-thirds of the Georgia General Assembly support Richardson's proposed constitutional amendment then the issue comes before the Georgia voters in November.
