January 28, 2008 CUMMING - A light bulb exploded Jan. 24 in the Forsyth Central High School auditorium and sent sparks onto some props on the stage. Two sprinklers extinguished the fire before it could spread.
Jennifer Caracciolo, spokeswoman with Forsyth County Schools, said the costs of the damage are still be assessed.
"The majority of the damage is smoke in the seating and stage drapery," she said, "and slight damage to the stage floor. We are very fortunate that students and staff were not injured, and that the facility did not sustain additional damage."
The fire caused the Jan. 26 county spelling bee to move from the auditorium to Cumming Elementary.
Caracciolo said she was very pleased with the Forsyth County Fire Department's response. "We appreciate the Forsyth County Fire Department's quick, responsive, reliable communication," she said, "and our maintenance staff's quick response."
