The South Forsyth High School senior received a call to start off December that would forever change her life. She learned she was one of 204 students in the United States to have been matched with QuestBridge National College Match scholarship, which amounts to more than $200,000 in funds for college.
Brickman said the moment of the phone call was surreal.
"I never thought I would get this scholarship," she said. "When I found out, I just screamed and cried."
Brickman will utilize her scholarship to attend Amherst College where she plans on majoring in biology.
"I want to become a surgeon," said Brickman who is also captain of the South Forsyth swim team.
There is no special recipe for success, Brickman said. She has always loved school.
"I like the idea of small classes," she said of attending Amherst. "This year, Amherst took four students for QuestBridge. I'm really excited."
Brickman said friends and family have been just as happy as she is.
"There was a lot of hype at school with my friends at first," she said with a smile, "but it kind of died down. It never got old in my head, though. If I'm ever frustrated with school, I just keep telling myself that next year I get to go to my favorite school of all time for free."
It was love at first sight for Brickman and Amherst. She attended an open house last year and the school really appealed to her.
"I loved it," she said. "The greens, reds and yellows in the beautiful land surrounding the campus was great. Everything about the school was fantastic."
Brickman keeps busy at South Forsyth. In addition to swim team and volunteer work, she is president of the National Latin Honors Society, secretary with Health Occupations Students of America, senior class secretary with student government and a member of the BETA Club.
Brickman has also won several awards including AP Latin Scholar of the Year in 2006, numerous swimming awards and many other academic as well as athletic awards.
