Transportation projects prioritized for Forsyth commissioners
by Logan Thomas
January 10, 2008
It took seven meetings lasting more than 16 hours for the seven-member Forsyth County Citizens Transportation Projects Selection Committee to finish their list of project priorities for the February special purpose local option sales tax ballot (SPLOST VI).
The committee completed its project list Jan. 2 and will presented the list to the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners Jan. 8.
The committee had to make decisions on what projects would be placed on a "priority A" list and which would be regulated to a "priority B" list. Both lists received a unanimous endorsement from the committee.
Chief Financial Officer Bill Thomas said the committee did a fantastic job.
"This is one of the finest committees I've ever had the pleasure of working with," he said.
The committee focused on $218 million expected for transportation projects.
Projects on the A list total $108.6 million while the B list projects total $110.07 million. The A list contains projects that are definitely expected to be funded through SPLOST while the B list will be funded if the SPLOST proceeds reach estimated levels.
The commissioners voted to accept the prioritized list and proceeded to disband the committee.
Commission Chairman Charles Laughinghouse said he wanted to thank the committee for the hard work.
"I want to express our gratitude and thanks for buckling down so we have a complete SPLOST VI list," he said. "Thanks for your time."
Commissioner David Richard said he agreed.
"You had a tough task with a very tight time line," he said.
The lone disagreement in the committee's final discussion was regarding placing funds on the SPLOST list for the Old Atlanta Road project. Turner said he would rather see this project placed on SPLOST VII.
"I just don't feel the numbers support this project," he said.
Charles Smith, the District Two committee member, said he disagreed.
"I think the need for this project is well documented," he said.
Bob Charles, District Three committee member, said he sees the need on Old Atlanta Road.
"I have to say that the need is there," he said. "I drive that road all the time and get stuck there."
