Roaches, scorpions, crickets, rats, mice and an entire host of other unwanted pests find entry into homes through cracks and crevices underneath and around door thresholds, windowsills, pipes, vent louvers and eaves.
My Pest Advice
• Caulking cracks and crevices, using screening, flashing and expanding foam insulation will seal these areas and keep out many of the pests all winter long.
Firewood stacks are favorite hibernating spots for roaches, ants, scorpions and many other insects. They like to get underneath the bark where it is nice and secure and sleep away the cold winter months.
• When you bring firewood inside, place it on the fire. Don't store it aside for later use. The bugs will awaken and you will have them crawling about all throughout your house.
Cold temperatures definitely bring the rats and mice indoors.
• If you hear strange noises in your attic or above drop ceilings....or if you even think you smell a urine-like odor in your attic or basement, don't ignore it. Inspect for droppings or signs of rodent feeding. Take immediate action.
