December 13, 2007 Atlanta police arrested a 57-year-old Atlanta man in connection with Thursday morning's armed robbery of the Capitol City Bank, just minutes after he allegedly exchanged fire with uniformed officers.
Special Agent in Charge Gregory Jones, FBI Atlanta, in conjunction with Chief Richard J. Pennington, Atlanta Police Department, announced the arrest of Donnie Atkins for his role in the armed robbery of the bank at 2358 Cascade Road, Atlanta.
Jones and Pennington report that on Thursday, Dec. 13, at approximately 9:15 a.m., two black males wearing masks and brandishing weapons entered the Capitol City Bank, and were immediately confronted by an armed, uniformed bank security guard at the entrance. During this confrontation, the security guard was disarmed.
One of the robbers then obtained an undisclosed amount of money from bank employees.
As the robbers departed, they split up. Police allege Atkins, was confronted by uniformed Atlanta police officers. Atkins allegedly leveled a .40 caliber semiautomatic and began firing at the officers. The officers returned fire and Atkins was struck in the left shoulder. Atkins attempted to flee, but was apprehended a short distance away.
The other robber, described as being a black male, in his late 20's or early 30's, dark complexion, 5'10" to 6'0" in height, remains at large.
Atkins remains in federal custody. He is being treated for his wounds at a local hospital. He will have an initial appearance before a U.S. magistrate judge Friday, Dec. 14.
