On Aug. 12, Sawnee Corners presented a $500 check to Ford Gravitt, mayor of Cumming, because they wanted to honor veterans by donating money to the Cumming Forsyth Veterans War Memorial. It was perfect timing as the city prepares to work on the memorial.
The $500 was raised when approximately 30 Sawnee Corners residents joined in the special bingo event.
Mayor Gravitt says the money raised by the Memorial Day event will assist with some much needed repair work and general upkeep costs of the memorial, which is in downtown Cumming.
"The memorial was created during the first Gulf War," says Gravitt. "It's really just a small token of appreciation to show people in the city, state and around the world that the city of Cumming and Forsyth county appreciates the commitment and sacrifice so many have made for our Nation."
At the presentation, Sawnee Corners veterans, George McDearmon and Harley Stoller helped present the check to the mayor. McDearmon and Stoller both represent a commitment to the country and to their community.
When residents first moved to Sawnee Corners in December of 2005, Corners Communities partners, Dennis Gravitt and Mike Smith wanted to create a different type of active adult community – one where anyone could find a strong sense of unity and cooperation.
The bingo tournament is just a small example of how people living in a community can join together and benefit a common cause.
"We appreciate all the residents that attended the Memorial Day event," Smith said. "It's the residents that call Sawnee Corners home that make this a great place to live and play."
