Northside-Forsyth summer teen volunteers gain lifetime experience

Several teenagers from around Forsyth County volunteered their time this summer to help out the patients and staff of Northside Hospital-Forsyth, gaining invaluable experience in the process.

The hospital's Volunteen program used 24 students, ages 15-17, for eight weeks serving throughout the hospital – everywhere from flower delivery to the biomedical engineering department.

At least 75 percent of the volunteers are interested in entering the medical field later in life, said Gloria Wyatt, coordinator of Auxiliary Services at Northside Hospital-Forsyth. The students use this experience to narrow their interests and build their résumés.

"They're very intelligent and very high achievers," Wyatt said.

The teens served 736 hours as a group. Wyatt said that the volunteers did more than simply help the hospital from a tactical standpoint.

"They renew people's faith in young people because of how great they are," Wyatt said. "The staff and adult volunteers loved them. They're just great kids."
