May 01, 2011 CUMMING, Ga. — The Humane Society of Forsyth County will be holding three major fundraising events this year.
The events include a casino night on May 14, a festival in June and a ball in October.
On May 14, the group's Monte Carlo Night takes place at Stars and Strikes, 133 Merchant Square in Cumming.
A Miss Georgia United States has asked to volunteer as a greeter at the event— sash and all, said Michele Leyland, chairwoman for the "Until They All Have a Home" benefit.
Prizes at the event will include a 40-inch plasma HDTV for the first place poker winner. A restored 1951 Ford Z truck will be up for auction. Leyland will auction her grandmother's antique diamond and platinum ruby watch (appraised at $2,200) and an autographed leather jacket by NASCAR driver Bobby Labonte.
"Animals really get people to care, and that's what this is all about," Leyland said. "I need people to come who care about the charity and want to have some fun."
Leyland said that during her quest for prizes, she encountered some good-natured people.
"Employees dug into their own pockets, because they knew there was no use in asking their corporate giant," Leyland said.
Donations begin at $25.

MUTTS AND MORE
On June 4, the inaugural Mutts and More Festival will take over for last year's Pet Fair at the Cumming Fairgrounds.
"There is quite a bit involved in it," said Sandra Haynes, a spokeswoman for the organization.
In the morning, there is a 5K run called, "A Race to Rescue."
Later, at 10 a.m., a "Mutt Strut" is scheduled.
Haynes said people can walk with or without a dog in the sponsored walk.
From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the festival will take place, where there will be rides and activities for the children.
Vendor booths, food and a lot of animal demonstrations will be held, Haynes said. Festivities are planned to run until about 5 p.m.
At 7 p.m., the "Bark After Dark" concert will begin.
Performers are to be announced.
BARK BOOGIE
On October 22, "Bark and Boogie Ball," the seventh annual black-tie optional fundraiser will take place at the Lanier Tech Convention Center.
"We have to start planning far out for this," Haynes said. "The main thrust of the evening is a live auction and silent auction."
Organizers are now soliciting auction items and sponsors for the event.
