ALPHARETTA – Montreal-based indie rock band Arcade Fire had good reason to deliver a stellar performance at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre Aug. 11: Earlier that day, Billboard announced the group claimed the bestselling album of the week with their newly released LP, "The Suburbs."

Thousands in the audience sang along as the band – whose unique sound, in part, comes from its use of accordion, violin and piano in addition to the typical guitar-and-percussion setup – played a diverse set list featuring new songs "Ready to Start" and "The Suburbs," as well as old favorites from their debut album, "Funeral." Lead singer Win Butler's loud, vibrato vocals on "Rebellion (Lies)" and "Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)" were complemented by wife Régine Chassagne's sweet, steady crooning on songs such as "Haiti."

Austin-formed band Spoon opened the night with what lead singer Britt Daniel said was their last show with Arcade Fire.

Though lacking Arcade Fire's live spark, Spoon played a solid show, high points of which included the fast-paced, compelling tune "Jonathon Fisk" from album "Kill the Moonlight" and Daniel's solo, acoustic performance of "Me and The Bean" from their 2001 album "Girls Can Tell." A brass band enhanced Spoon's sound and stage presence, and certainly helped warm up the crowd for the polyphonic headlining act.
