NORTH FULTON - Schools in North Fulton grew at a modest rate of 2 percent from 2008 to 2009, reflecting the same rate of growth seen system-wide from last year's enrollment figures.

With attendance now topping 90,000 students, Fulton retains its standing as the state's fourth-largest school system, behind only Gwinnett (156,000 students), Cobb (107,000) and DeKalb (100,000).

Of the 2,090 new students who entered the Fulton County School System this year, about half enrolled in schools in North Fulton, primarily in elementary and high school.

Middle school enrollment for the 2009-2010 school year held steady for the most part, with several schools — particularly in the Roswell area — actually seeing a decline in students.

Portable classrooms are still a presence in most schools throughout the area, but the severe overcrowding of years past is now spotty.

Crowded schools benefited from the opening of two institutions this year – Johns Creek High, which relieved Northview and Chattahoochee high schools, and Birmingham Falls Elementary, which was the catalyst for redistricting at many elementary schools in Milton, Roswell and Alpharetta.

A number of schools, primarily in Roswell, were also able to absorb the growing number of students with the opening of new classroom wings at Mimosa, Mountain Park and Roswell North

elementaries.

Mimosa, with 1,031 students, is the largest elementary school in North Fulton, followed closely by Cogburn Woods with 1,019.

While some schools, particularly Cogburn Woods and Esther Jackson elementary schools in North Fulton, enrolled students above the numbers projected, the overall forecast for the school system was on target.

A school spokesperson noted system planners accurately projected enrollment within 10 students.

The leveling off of student growth appears to be the trend of the future for Fulton Schools, which saw huge growth beginning in the late 1990's.

In 1998, Fulton Schools had an enrollment of 65,600 students. Ten years later, that number had risen to more than 88,000.

School planners note as land became more built-out and gentrification sets in to the established neighborhoods, student growth slowed from double digits to more moderate increases.
