Area rowers brave conditions for regatta
|
November 18, 2009 BOSTON – Rowers in two boats representing the Atlanta Junior Rowing Association (AJRA) competed in the Head of the Charles – the largest and most prestigious regatta in the world – in Boston Oct. 18.
Braving extreme weather conditions that included temperatures in the 30s, heavy rains and 30 mph winds, AJRA's women's 4 (four rowers plus a coxswain) placed 24th among an international field of 77 boats.
AJRA's men's 8+ placed 54th in a competitive field of 79 boats from around the world.
Women's rowers were: Katura Finn (coxswain), Roswell; Sarah Waye, Pope; Emma Murray, Blessed Trinity; Josephine Kooijman, Walton; and Victoria Hartmann, Northview. Alternates are Madison Hald, Roswell, and Emily Hornberger, Walton. The varsity women are coached by Bryce Carlson and Julie McQueen.
Representing AJRA in the Men's boat were Betsy Bender (coxswain), Walton; Jack Campbell, The Walker School; Matt Cecil, Northview; Matt Goldman, Galloway; Zach Lawhon, Centennial; Sean Olliffe, Roswell; Nate Reineck, Galloway; Michael Walczak, Roswell, and Cameron Whiting, Pope. The varsity men are coached by John Pearson and Ty Tucker.
