The teacher explained her class would be designing post cards for President Jimmy Carter as part of a Georgia student art contest recognizing the famous Georgian's 85th birthday.
As the third graders began to sketch and color, Augustu Pacleb inserted his card into his Perkins Braillewriter and wrote "Happy Birthday President Carter."
Marsha Skinner, teacher for the visually impaired, reminded her students about the President's famous occupation as a peanut farmer, and Augustu had his idea for his birthday creation. He arranged peanut-shaped craft foam decorations to surround his Braille message to the nation's 39th President.
Augustu traveled Sept. 26 to Plains, Ga., with his family, Ray, Evangeline, Evan, and Marku as well as Skinner to receive his award as the third place winner for Georgian third graders in the Jimmy Carter NHS Education Program Art Contest. Augustu took his place with other contest winners at the Plains train depot and awaited the presentation of his award. On cue, he located the microphone and confidently introduced himself to the ceremony spectators. President Jimmy Carter presented him with a certificate and placed a medal around Augustu's neck.
This art contest is a state-wide contest held in September. Winners are invited to be in the Plains Peanut Festival Parade and receive an award during the festival. Winning cards selected from 22,000 entries can be seen at www.jimmycarter.info/spotlight_1.
