Alpharetta – Two years ago, AMG Medical of Alpharetta needed a year to give away 5,000 of its Hugo folding canes to U.S. military veterans, doing all the work on its own.

On Veterans Day this year, the company gained help from Sam's Club, several other corporate sponsors and VFW Post 12002 to start giving away 25,000 canes in a program called "Hugo Salutes Our Veterans."

The national program kicked off with additional help from Alpharetta Mayor Arthur Letchas at the Sam's Club off Mansell Road near Ga. 400. Every Sam's Club in the nation was participating in the program.

Letchas thanked the company for what it has done for veterans. He said everyone needs to pay tribute to all veterans, especially on Veterans Day, which was chosen for the program's kickoff.

"To us, every day is Veteran's Day," said Al Lipphardt, commander of VFW's District 3 in Georgia.

Robert Gurecka, AMG Medical's general manager, said the Hugo folding canes were designed with assistance from the non-profit Georgia Research Institute. It normally retails for $29.99.
