After a visit to the California Pizza Kitchen in Alpharetta, Pinecrest art teacher Alison Batley saw an opportunity to engage her students in an unusual way.
Her 10th grade boys drawing and painting class was challenged to "think outside of the pizza box" and transform it into a work of art inspired by one of their personal interests.
Batley's sculpture classes made relief sculptures out of the boxes, her digital imaging class went to the restaurant and photographed the space and the food, and AP studio art students were challenged to create a box that illustrates their personal design process.
The designs decorated the walls of the restaurant for a week.
"The guests really loved seeing the art work and were amazed at the quality of the designs," said General Manager Tim Aquino.
"Each student's personality really came through in the work."
Students were enthusiastic hoping that the show will become an annual event.
"Best of Show awards" and $20 gift certificates were given in the following
categories:
• Rachael Lee — AP art
• Teresa Vu — girls sculpture
• Mike Outlaw — boys sculpture
• Kevin Metz — digital imaging
• Nico Sanchez — drawing and painting
