McGinnis Ferry Bridge contract OK'd

ATLANTA – A $7.7 million construction project to build a four-lane bridge on McGinnis Ferry Road across the Chattahoochee River linking Gwinnett with Forsyth and Fulton counties will ease traffic bottlenecks on this east-west corridor.
C.W. Matthews of Marietta won the contract with its bid. The bridge should be completed by April 30, 2012.
Ga. Department of Transportation (GDOT) Commissioner Vance C. Smith Jr. announced last week that $102 million was awarded in October for safety, resurfacing and bridge replacement projects throughout Georgia.
The McGinnis Ferry Road bridge project over the Chattahoochee River has been a joint project between Forsyth County, Fulton County, Gwinnett County and GDOT, according to Forsyth spokeswoman Jodi Gardner.
"Forsyth County has taken the lead on the design for this bridge with the engineering cost being split three ways between each county," she said via e-mail.
Each county has handled the required right-of-way acquisition and easements within their jurisdiction and also agreed to fund the utility relocation costs. GDOT agreed to fund the construction cost for this project.
This project completes the connection between the already widened McGinnis Ferry Road in Gwinnett County to the section currently being widened in Forsyth and Fulton counties between the Chattahoochee River through the intersection of Sargent Road. This will prevent a bottleneck at the present two-lane bridge.
McGinnis Ferry Road is a regional road that serves as an east-west arterial between Ga. 400 and I-85.
GDOT also announced funding for resurfacing county and city roads in the Local Assistance Road Program (LARP), a resurfacing program designed to help local governments maintain roadway infrastructure. Funding for LARP projects comes from the state Motor Vehicle Fuel Tax. GDOT reviews the lists of projects received from each local government and makes selections based on need and availability of funds once the level of funding is established. The next group of LARP projects will be awarded in spring 2010.
