Kimball Bridge replacement project starts soon
|
November 04, 2009 Alpharetta – The Ga. Department of Transportation (GDOT) will soon let the $4.2 million contract replacing Kimball Bridge over Big Creek — as soon as Fulton County and GDOT remove the last obstacle to getting started, that is.
GDOT must have all utility removal agreements in hand before it can begin, and a "few details" remain between Fulton County and the agency over water lines, said GDOT spokesman Mark McKinnon. Meanwhile, the apparent low bidder is C.W. Matthews Contracting Co. If work can begin soon, the bridge is scheduled to be completed in 23 months, or Sept. 30, 2011.
The bridge, located on the east side of Ga. 400, will be completely replaced with two 12-foot travel lanes, two 4-foot bike lanes and 6-foot sidewalks. The detour for the project has not yet been determined.
"What makes this project more challenging from other bridge replacements is GDOT will raise the road as it approaches the bridge from either side and shift it a little to the south to conform to possible widening of the road in the future," McKinnon said.
The $4.2 million cost will be covered entirely by state and federal funds. There will be no local match.
