Live hand grenade found in vacant back yard
|
November 03, 2009 FORSYTH COUNTY — A man cleaning up the backyard of a vacant property on Wits End Road in Gainesville Oct. 21 found what authorities confirmed was a live grenade.
The man who called the Sheriff's Office told dispatchers he wasn't sure if the grenade was live or a toy, so he called to make sure.
One of the deputies who responded had been in the military, and he was able to surmise it was, in fact, a live "pineapple" MKII hand grenade. The grenades were in use mostly during World War II and into Vietnam.
Everyone was evacuated from the area. Firefighters wanted to see if the pin was still in it and the "spoon" still attached, so they turned the grenade over using a rope rig. They were, meaning it was live.
The United States Army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal at Ft. Stewart was called to the scene to retrieve the grenade. The grenade was disposed of safely, said a spokeswoman at the base.
