The 22-foot-tall, 3,700 pound Deodar cedar was donated by Protect Milton Inc., a local citizens action group. It was grown at Moon's Tree Farm in Loganville and transported for free by McFarland Road-based Skinner's Nursery. Landscapers from The Roland Group oversaw its planting, which drew more than 40 people, including local politicians — it is election season, after all — plus residents and city hall staff.
The tree can grow up to 50 feet high and 30 feet wide in its new home. It will be decorated and lit during a ceremony planned for the beginning of the holiday season, said city officials.
Lisa Cauley is chairwoman of Protect Milton Inc.
She said the group was proud and honored to donate the tree.
"We hope it offers years of enjoyment for the families in Milton for generations to come," she said. "Overall, it was a great day for Milton, and we look forward to the city's inaugural lighting in the next few weeks."
Mayor Joe Lockwood said that's precisely what the tree will do.
"The planting of this majestic tree creates a lasting monument to our city's love of trees and the environment," he said. "Years from now, Milton citizens will gather at this tree to celebrate our community and the beginning of the holiday season in Milton."
