Roswell mayoral candidates on the issues: Lori Henry
|
October 28, 2009 REVUE: The mayor's position is one mainly of leadership. How will you lead the City Council? What examples of leadership can you point to?
HENRY: I have been a successful leader almost my entire adult life. I led a business for nine years. I led classrooms for five years. I've helped lead a Roswell family for 22 years. And in my eight years on City Council, I've been a leader on development and redevelopment issues, on protecting neighborhoods, on controlling spending and on keeping taxes low. I will continue those leadership efforts as mayor and expand them to include crime control, business development, immigration enforcement and other crucial areas.
REVUE: What are the areas that Roswell needs to work on most, and what are your solutions for them?
HENRY: Roswell must get back to smart, conservative budgeting. Both of my opponents worked together this year to push through a deficit budget during a crippling recession. I opposed them, voting instead for a balanced budget by implementing sensitive cuts. As mayor I will make sure that the days of deficit spending in Roswell are ended.
We need to retool the city's dysfunctional Community Development Department, which Mayor Wood has turned into a personal playground for his pet projects, like Charlie Brown's ultra-high density development in East Roswell, which I led the opposition to. Under Wood, the Community Development Department is unfriendly to businesses and residents and is an impediment to first-rate development and progress in our city. I will turn it into a welcoming environment that guides residents, business owners and top-quality builders through the permitting process.
REVUE: What qualities make you the best candidate for this job?
HENRY: See answer No. 1.
