Susan Lister said Giving Children A Chance (GCAC) of Georgia has a simple goal.

"We want to help children have a better life," said the executive director during an Oct. 22 ribbon cutting ceremony for the group's new offices in Alpharetta.

The GCAC private placing agency works through the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) to place foster children.

Lister told those in attendance the story of Isaiah, a 5-year-old in the GCAC program who was "angry and afraid" when she first met him. After six months of nurturing, Isaiah was unified with his parents.

"He brought with him a great deal of self esteem and learned to read at his grade level," Lister said. "The last thing he said to me was, 'I am special, aren't I?' That's what were all about."

Lister said GCAC accepted their first child into care 24 months ago and has since served 100 children. She said none of this could have been possible without the foster parents.

"I am constantly humbled by the commitment of the foster parents," she said.

Alpharetta Mayor Arthur Letchas said programs like GCAC are crucial.

"In this day and time kids need all the help they can get at all levels," he said. "They need our help and I thank you all for what you are

doing."

President and CEO of the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce Brandon Beech agreed with Letchas.

"There is a need you all provide here for families," he said. "I feel blessed to live in this community."
